To install an interpreter, we can open up the command palette. That means it goes through your code line by line in order to give you some results. Remember Python is an interpreted language. Now, before we can officially get started working with Python, we need to choose an interpreter. So we're going to quit and then open it up again. And then once that's complete, we can go ahead and restart Visual Studio Code. For now, let's go ahead and install it by clicking on the Install button. It'll become more and more familiar as you continue on your programming journey. Don't worry if you don't understand everything about this right now. It has things like linting, debugging, or code navigation. If we click on this extension, we get tons of information about the various features that it supports. So the first thing we're going to do is go to Tools and Languages. In order to work with Python inside of Visual Studio Code, we need to use a Python extension. So we're going to hit Exit to leave this overview. For now, this is good enough to get you started. Further, we can do launching and debugging as well as manage extensions. First, we can explore the various files, search across files, or we can even use things like source code management. From here, we can see the various options that are available to us inside VS Code. In order to understand a bit more about this particular IDE, we're going to go to the Learn section and click on the interface overview. From here, you can create a new file, open up a folder, or customize it with extensions. The first thing you see when you come to Visual Studio Code is the welcome screen. Now we can go ahead and open up Visual Studio Code. And in order to use Visual Studio Code, we're going to copy our file over to the applications folder. Once it's finished downloading, we can double click the zip file to open it up. And then we're going to choose the Download for Mac button. So the first thing we're going to do is come to. VS Code is a great cross-platform editor, as it's fast, easy to customize, and has a friendly user interface. Also install the Desktop development with C++ workload for full C++ support.- We'll be using Visual Studio Code, or VS Code for short, as our IDE for this course. Installs the C++ compiler and other necessary components to develop native extensions for Python. Installs tools for web development including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript editing support, along with templates for projects using the Bottle, Flask, and Django frameworks. Installs the Cookiecutter graphical UI to discover templates, input template options, and create projects and files. Also, if a newer version of Python is available than what's shown in the installer, you can install that version separately and Visual Studio will detect it. Visual Studio automatically detects existing Python installations. Anaconda, specifically, is an open data science platform that includes a wide range of pre-installed packages. Each includes the distribution's interpreter, runtime, and libraries. The installer provides a list of workloads that are groups of related options for specific development areas.įor Python, select the Python development workload and select Install:Ĭhoose any combination of the available options, such as 32-bit and 64-bit variants of the Python 2, Python 3, Miniconda, Anaconda2, and Anaconda3 distributions that you plan to work with. For other uses, install Visual Studio Professional or Visual Studio Enterprise. The Community edition is for individual developers, classroom learning, academic research, and open source development.
